Computer literacy is an essential skill for many of our students' educational journey and future careers. At Good Hope, we cater to families with limited financial resources, and for many (if not all!), this is their first exposure to computers. In Teacher Thomas' class, we start with the basics: setting up a workspace, powering on a laptop, typing exercises, creating tables, drawing on images, and soon, exploring the vast world of the internet. 🤓 💻

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to @labdoo_d for their tremendous support in equipping our classroom with computers. We are also immensely grateful to our individual donors who have generously provided laptops for either our classroom or sponsored students at university. Your contributions are vital in preparing our students for success in this fast-paced, modern world. Your contribution matters, and it will make a lasting difference in their lives. ❤️💙❤️

Over the past several months we regularly posted stories and pictures of our kindergarten. But we have not yet officially introduced this new program of Good Hope to you, have we???

The Good Hope Kindergarten is one of the prevention programs that we officially introduced in January 2023. Led by our teachers Olivari and Hussein, and through the support of local and international volunteers, we offer an early years learning experience for up to 35 children. We welcome children from the age of two to five years old. In our kindergarten, we promote collaborative and creative thinking and increase the children's motor skills through coordination exercises. We also provide our children with basic knowledge in reading, writing, and calculating, especially through games and songs in a colorful learning environment surrounded by green trees and banana plants. 🌳🌿🌴

Most of our children come from disadvantaged families for whom early childhood education creates several challenges. In some families, the parents or guardians themselves did not receive adequate formal education that would enable them to provide their children with basic knowledge of reading, writing, and calculating. In other families, the parents or guardians have to work to make ends meet which leaves them little to no time to sit down patiently for exercises such as counting from one to ten. Although there exist quite a few kindergartens in the Moshi area, they often remain inaccessible to marginalized families who cannot afford to pay the comparatively high monthly admission fees.

As a non-profit organization, we provide these children with early childhood education free of charge. This way we ensure that every child playfully learns how much fun learning can be! Through kindergarten education, we set a wonderful foundation for good progress through school and life, which will have a tremendous impact on the future opportunities of the children.

The Stepping Stone Program is our oldest program at Good Hope. Since 2011 we have welcomed adolescents who finished their primary school education (7th grade), but do not have access to free, government-funded secondary school. When children in Tanzania finish primary school, they are required to write their Primary School Leaving Exam. This exam is used as a barrier to block students from receiving further education – students that fail the exam cannot access further education unless their families pay for private school education (which is cost prohibitive for many families). All students at Good Hope either failed their national examination, or did pass this exam and could not afford to go to secondary school right away.

Unfortunately, once a student is out of the governmental school system, s/he cannot join government- funded secondary school education. Good Hope provides them with an opportunity to stay engaged in education. Year-round our teachers Thomas and Hussein, and international volunteers teach English, Mathematics, Computers, Geography, Science, Arts, and Healthcare in our youth center.

Usually, a student stays in our Stepping Stone Program for approximately two years. In those two years, our teachers and social workers help the students gain confidence, create a vision for their future, and help them figure out what their talents are. Some students are very crafty and find vocational training through the support of their parents, extended families, or Good Hope. Others discover that they do have a passion for school education. Their previous ill success in primary school may have been the result of a lack of educational support at their homes, others missed out on important lessons due to their periods or sickness and had trouble catching up in the often-overcrowded classrooms of 70 students, and others simply needed more time to develop. Some of those students have later been rewarded with a private school sponsorship through Good Hope.

But no matter what: we know that all of our students have talent and we are working hand in hand with our students and their families in order to figure out how to enable them to fulfil their dreams. ❤️💙❤️

Come, let us take you to one of Moshi's primary schools to distribute our Binti Pads! 🙌🏾

In 2022 we were able to visit four different primary schools and handed out about 300 free packages of washable sanitary pads to the 5th to 7th graders. Each package contains four pads. With each visit also comes a short course on menstrual health, held both by our young mothers who made the pads, as well as our staff, Sarah and Oliver.

We are so happy to receive many requests from various schools in Moshi. When we visit, we are usually given the best classroom the school has to offer, and the school girls actively participate in our seminar asking questions that often remain unanswered at their homes. We are so thankful for this sincere appreciation of our services! ❤️

And of course, we are thankful for our wonderful donors who make such visits possible! Because of you, those girls won't need to miss important lessons due to a lack of feminine hygiene products. This way, you increase their chances of successfully finishing seventh grade in primary school.
And because of you, those girls receive valuable seminars on menstrual health that fights period stigma, enables girls to make informed decisions on menstrual hygiene products, and carefully paves the way toward comprehensive sexuality education. 💙❤️💙

2022! WHAT A YEAR!  🥳

With great pride and gratitude, we can look back to a year full of growth, learning, and success. For the Team at Good Hope this year passed by even quicker than any other year. Because this year has blessed us with so many new impressions, new friendships, and new projects that fill our lives with great purpose and joy. And it is true that time really does fly when you’re having fun!

We have also encountered many challenges. Be it students at Good Hope from troubled homes, families in our communities that live in tremendous socio-economic hardship, or even the challenge of exceptionally high demand for our services in the second half of this year... We have been able to overcome many of those challenges through the help of our wonderful friends, sponsors, donors, and the hard work of our international and local volunteers and interns. We want to thank all of you for your unwavering support and your hard work this year!!! ❤️

Among other things and through your support, we have been able to:
- conduct brief research on drug consumption and family support to families affected by drug use in our Njoro neighborhood
- provide a child with the much-needed follow-up operation for her cleft palate
- emergency intervention for a mother with malnourished baby twins: provision of clothes, food, and payment of hospital bills
- progressively add a kindergarten program for up to 30 children to our NGO
- provide 30 students with a secondary school preparation short course (3 months)
- provide three new school-sponsorships
- provide five teenage mothers with a rewarding tailoring-training
- provide more than 300 school-girls with free washable sanitary pads
.... and so much more. And we are ready to roll up our sleeves for an equally busy year 2023!

And finally, to our beloved friends, the Good Hope Team would like to send you the warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May peace, love, and health always follow you! ❤️

WHATEVER IS BEAUTIFUL.
WHATEVER IS MEANINGFUL.
WHATEVER BRINGS YOU HAPPINESS.
MAY IT BE YOURS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON! ❤️💙❤️
