When we opened our doors to children from near and far, we soon realized that our students often came to us with an empty stomach. Mothers in financially less fortunate families have to get up very early in the morning to go to the markets and then to work, in order to generate income for their families. For children in those families, preparing breakfast can be quite a hassle. For others an early breakfast can be too expensive and the families have to rely on one meal per day in the afternoon.

As a result, many students at Good Hope had troubles remaining focused past 10am, while we wanted to offer classes until 2pm. This is why we initiated the Breakfast Club in 2013. The Breakfast Club gives the Good Hope students nourishment for their bodies, as well as their minds. Every school day at Good Hope, the students receive a nourishing breakfast with tea and seasonal foods such as fried banana, bread or a fried bun (mandazi); and a fruit such as pineapple, avocado, or sweet banana. Without this Breakfast Club, many of Good Hope’s students would not have access to a good meal in the morning.

We are so glad to be able to offer a diverse breakfast to our students that makes them smile happily and provides them with enough energy to stay focused at our centre (often even past 2pm to chatter and play with their peers in a safe environment 😊).

Corporal punishment is a common practice in Tanzanian schools and is viewed as a necessary tool for discipline among many parents and teachers, as well as students themselves. At Good Hope, we do not support such practices and continuously make efforts to reflect and improve on our own educational practices, to avoid emotional damage to our students. This is why we believe in positive encouragement for our students: appraisal, acknowledgement, and little rewards that are designed to encourage continued growth and support young minds.

Last week’s math competition was won by our smart but shy student, Jeni. What a genius!

Meet our Team! 👭🏿👨🏾‍🤝‍👨🏽👩🏽‍🤝‍👨🏿🧑🏿‍🤝‍🧑🏿

Meet Oliver Canada Siriwa. 🌺

Oliver co-founded Good Hope in 2011 and is Good Hope’s director. She coordinates the work of Good Hope employees, connects with government officials and other organizations, and counsels our students and their families. Oliver always welcomes our students, employees, and our guests with an open heart. Maybe even you have visited Oliver for a nice cookout at her home in Majengo? 😊

Oliver’s ambitions have always been deeply rooted within the community: as a young adult, she began working with the Catholic Church to become a sister, but eventually started volunteering for the Catholic NGO “Rainbow Center” while running a small business selling secondhand clothing. Through Rainbow Center she received training in home-based healthcare and became one of the first HIV/AIDS advocates in Moshi when the pandemic was on the rise in the 1990’s.

Unlike her brothers who went to secondary school, Oliver and her sisters had been denied secondary school education – simply for being girls. But she never let this stop her, as she energetically says, “I want for people to see that I can do it!” – a contagious energy that she spreads among all our employees and students. Fueled with vigor, she follows her mission to fight stigma against infectious diseases such as HIV, to encourage young students to follow their dreams for higher education, and to treat each other with kindness and love.

Thank you Oliver, for your tireless efforts to improve our community. ❤️

To all of our friends and supporters from near and far: We wish all of you a very merry Christmas filled with joy and surrounded by family and/or friends. 💖

As the year is coming to an end, we also want to seize the opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude! We are immensely thankful for your many encouraging words and discussions, for those who are volunteering for us, and for those who fund our work. Through your growing support, also Good Hope has been able to grow and expand our services for the marginalized youth in our community. Thank you so much and be blessed! ❤️
